Panel Discussion on the Bill of Rights with Harry Belafonte a Success

By all accounts the Flag Day Celebration was a success. More than 450 people came to celebrate the principles of democracy and freedom that our flag stands for, and many became new ACLU members. The program was compelling enough to keep the audience for a full 3 hours as the discussion ran very long.

Keynote Speaker Harry Belafonte "spoke passionately about the need for protection of the Bill of Rights" (Beckley Register Herald 6/15/04), and the panel of community members moderated by Humanities Scholar Joan C. Browning discussed various Constitutional amendments. The event was videoed, and may be screened later.

The panelists shared views about the impact of the Bill of Rights on religious freedoms, the press, politics, law, justice and social equality.
